Francis Burt Law Education Centre

Housed in the Old Court House Law Museum (the oldest building in the City of Perth), the Francis Burt Law Education Centre (FBLEC) provides a specialised community legal education and civics program that is interactive and student-focused. FBLEC’s legal education resources, programs and court visits are mapped to support the school curriculum in areas of legal and civics studies focusing on Western Australian content.

FBLEC’s objective is to promote the Western Australian community’s understanding of the law, legal issues and the legal system. FBLEC is a community service managed by the Law Society of Western Australia and is sponsored by the Public Purposes Trust, the Department of the Attorney General and the Department of Education.

FBLEC facilitates court visits, provides education resources , professional development workshops for teachers and also hosts an interactive Mock Trials Competition for secondary students.

Qualified Education Officers present structured legal education programs for:
  • Primary and high schools (a wide range of curriculum-mapped areas);
  • Tertiary institutions (TAFE, universities and International Language Colleges);
  • Community groups; as well as
  • Professional Development for teachers and Community Legal Educators.

  • Tours at the Perth and Fremantle centres typically run for two hours and consist of:
  • Viewing a court in session (Supreme Court, District Court, Magistrates Court);
  • Empty court activity; and
  • Scripted trial re-enactments.
